Lucha Libre

In Spanish, Lucha Libre means, literally, Free Fighting. However, to San Diegans and some lucky tourists, Lucha Libre means waiting in line for some of the tastiest, cheapest Mexican eats this side of the border. Tucked away in a corner of Mission Hills that bumps against the 5, this taco shop always hosts a long line of eager customers. We decided to see what all of the fuss was about, thinking that with that kind of line, there must be something to the food.

And there was. Interesting combinations of seafood, chicken, and beef, it was more like a gourmet Chipotle than burrito shop. After considering the mahi-mahi tacos and chicken burrito, we settled on splitting the surf n’ turf burrito, a sumptuous medley of sliced, marinated skirt steak, grilled shrimp, avocado, tomato, onion, and lettuce. A side of guacamole and some chips later, we were set.

The verdict: loved it! The steak was tender and tasty, and was plentiful without overpowering the rest of the ingredients. The shrimp were slightly overcooked, but for under 7 bucks, I wasn’t complaining. The vegetables were fresh and plentiful. The burrito held a perfect flavor combination with the soft, buttery avocado and succulent steak and shrimp. The guac was fresh and, although a tiny serving, was plenty for the 65 cents (yes, that cheap) that we paid.

The line was rather long, and on some nights can move slowly. However, the staff were friendly and accommodating, providing everyone with a smile and an efficient order. The other downside would be that although comparable in price with El Zarape, the selection was not as plentiful. Lucha Libre tends to specialize in a select few amazing burritos and tacos rather than the full menu of enchiladas and other Mexican specialties offered as EZ.

Definitely worth heading back!
