Red Door

I’ll give you a little tip about San Diego – the happy hours here rock! It seems that every restaurant in this city has an amazing happy hour almost daily, featuring drink and food specials. It’s a great way to “test drive” a restaurant without committing to a full-blown dinner, or just to indulge in the atmosphere at a lower cost! ;)

I read recently that Red Door was voted best happy hour in San Diego, and since it’s in my neighborhood, I just had to check it out! I’m always up for trying out a new happy hour!

The atmosphere was surprisingly quiet for a Friday afternoon, we were one of two tables in the bar. The décor was wonderfully elegant, yet casual. A bench outlined a big window area, with tables alongside to enjoy the bustle of the street while we sipped our wines.

Speaking of wines, Red Door has quite a wine list! All were priced special for the happy hour, and after some consideration, we both went with a South African wine, Goats do Roam (a play on Cotes du Rhone!). Delicious! South Africa is certainly making a name for itself in the wine world.

We intended to order just a snack, but after tasting the scrumptious spinach artichoke dip served with homemade tortillas and toasts, we decided to just have dinner! We split the burger and the grilled romaine hearts salad served with bleu cheese and candied walnuts. Simple, but delicious! Perfectly cooked, tender ground beef atop a homemade bun with fresh toppings. The salad was amazing. Plentiful, tender greens with a homemade creamy vinaigrette dressing, this salad was by no means healthy, but so, so good as a foil to the burger.

After another glass of wine, we decided to skip dessert, as we were full, but I will definitely be back to try some of their regular menu items. However, I’m more than pleased with their happy hour offerings!
