The Saltbox

How was your Restaurant Week? Mine was fabulous! After much drooling over their menus, their sexy decor, and amazing drinks, I final took the opportunity to visit Saltbox downtown. Oh my goodness!

The minute that I walked into the HUGE door (wish I'd taken a pic), the ambiance was enticing. Chill, chic, yet elegant. We were quickly seated and perusing the menu. So many great choices! They are known for the cocktails, so I decided to try the fixed price flight of three of the tastiest beverages I've ever had the pleasure of imbibing.

On to the food!!! Each appetizer sounded wonderful, but I decided on the kale salad with white anchovies, and my husband was dying for the short rib grilled cheese. The salad itself was pure awesome, but the sandwich! Holy schnikies! So flavorful and tender! This is truck-driving food with a gourmet twist. Order this. Even if you're vegan.

For main courses, I chose the butternut squash ravioli, since I usually love it, and I felt like a little less meat in my diet would be a good thing. And more kale! According to the health community, I need more of that. However, tasting this delicious, savory dish, it was anything but healthy tasting. So satisfying and cozy! The sauce was a rich, brown butter, the perfect compliment for the sweet squash.

My husband ordered the cioppino, which he generously shared. As he has said many times, if it's from the sea, I probably like it, and this soup was no exception. Spicy and a bit thick, served with a rouille on the side, this was another wonderfully warming dish. Fresh sourdough bread made it heaven.

And finally, it was time for dessert! There were two choices for Restaurant Week, and we each got one. There was a gourmet s'more (is this the new chic dessert, or what?) and chocolate (!) churros served with vanilla creme anglaise. Both were excellent, and a nice little taste to end the meal. I especially loved the spongy texture of the churros. I wish that the s'more had been a bit more gooey, but it was still great!

And guess what! Restaurant Week is extended! So get on OpenTable: San Diego Restaurants  and make those reservations!!!!
