Acqua al 2

Remember my trip to Tuscany a year ago? After I heard that one of the restaurants in Florence has a sister restaurant right here in San Diego, I knew that I had to try it.

Located in the Gaslamp District, Acqua al 2 combines the traditions of Tuscan cooking with some unique twists. When we arrived for dinner, the restaurant was mostly empty, but filled up very quickly.
We were greeted very promptly and served their complimentary crusty bread with a warm white bean dip. The dip had a mild, comforting flavor, and served warm, was addictive.

The wine list was pretty interesting. It was shown to us on a tablet computer, which was novel, but ultimately, kind of strange. I think that I prefer simple paper menus. We flipped down through the list, and decided to order two of the house reds (we always got the house wine in Italy). The wines were delicious!

Our first course was the caprese salad. I adore the simplicity of this traditional salad of tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil. This salad also had some greens to give it some more punch. The perfection of this salad comes from the freshness and flavor of its few ingredients, and it is more than the sum of its parts.

For our main course, we shared the filet mignon with blueberry sauce and the gorgonzola gnocchi. The steak was excellent; I would have never expected the blueberry sauce to be so good on steak, but it just worked. It was tart, and not too sweet.

The gnocchi was quite good. Delicious, cheesy, and pungent, it was a very rich side dish for an extravagant meal. All of their pasta dishes could be ordered as a main or a side, and it was quite difficult to choose which one that I wanted to try!
Definitely a great taste of Tuscany right here in San Diego!
