Smashing Burgers at Smashburger San Marcos

Smashburger has been a San Diego staple ever since their emergence in the metro area three years ago. Has it really only been three years? Seems like they, like me, have been here forever (yeah, I've only been here for 3.5 years).

Recently, Smashburger opened new digs in the San Marcos area, and I was invited to check it out! I just can't say no to a delicious burger!
A new menu has been released since I last visited a Smashburger, containing such interesting items as San Diego burger, featuring fresh avocado, cilantro, pepper jack, lettuce, tomato, onion, sour cream and chipotle mayo on a torta roll served with a wedge of lime, and the Spicy Baja, which features fresh jalapenos, guacamole, pepper jack, lettuce, tomato, onion and chipotle mayo on a spicy chipotle bun.

We started our visit with one of the famous Smashburger milkshakes -- Butterfinger, yum!!! You can see that we hated it by the scraped clean glass.

To taste the new menu, we ordered a selection of items: the BBQ, bacon, and cheddar burger, featuring BBQ sauce, applewood-smoked bacon, cheddar and haystack onions on an egg bun; the San Diego chicken sandwich, featuring fresh avocado, cilantro, pepper jack, lettuce, tomato, onion, sour cream and chipotle mayo on a telera roll served with a wedge of lime; and the truffle mushroom swiss burger, with truffle mayo, sautéed baby portabella mushrooms and aged Swiss on an egg bun. For our sides, we chose the Smash fries and veggie frites.

Our food came out quite quickly, and we were delighted with the array of tasty items. I first tried the truffle mushroom swiss burger, which I ordered with mayo on the side (sorry, I just can't eat mayonnaise).

Check out that pile of sauteed mushrooms! This burger was delicious, and so fresh! I really love the caramelized taste of the smashed burger patties (more on that later). I love mushroom swiss burgers, and this one was quite excellent. The fresh egg bun really made this a great burger all around.

My next taste was the veggie frites. Now, I know that fries are the traditional accompaniment to a burger, and I love me some fries. However, these flash-fried carrot sticks and green beans could very well nudge fries as a contender for a burger side! These veggies were delicious, and quite a bit more healthy than fries. It's really nice that Smashburger offers a healthier alternative side.

My next taste was the San Diego chicken sandwich. Made with the influence of San Diego cuisine, this sandwich featured avocado, tomatoes, sour cream, cilantro, and pepper jack. This sandwich was incredible! The chicken was nice and fresh, and the seasoning was perfect. The pepper jack cheese was delicious and stood out well with the chicken.

Next, I tried the Smashfries, which were delicious! Nice and mealy, with a rosemary seasoning, they were a perfect side to our burgers (and pretty necessary to me. I can't eat a burger without fries).

My last taste was the BBQ, bacon, and cheddar burger. This burger is definitely hardy, with big slices of bacon, cheddar cheese, and a slather of BBQ sauce. This burger was also quite good, and the flavor of the caramelized burger patty melded nicely with that of the cheddar cheese and bacon.

After we finished our meals (no, we weren't able to finish all of that!), I got a rare treat. I was asked to come into the kitchen and create a Smashburger!

Smashburger creates their signature burgers by taking fresh ground beef, weighing it into the appropriate size, then forming it into a large ball. When cooked, the meatwad (yes, just like Aqua Teen Hunger Force) is placed onto the griddle with a piece of wax paper. It is then pressed down using the pressing tool, so that the metal meets the metal, for ten full seconds. This procedure is what creates that delicious caramelization of the beef. The burger is then cooked for another 45 seconds or so, seasoned with their signature blend, and carefully flipped to finish cooking to medium well.

Check out the picks of me doing the SMASH!!!

Caramelization achieved!
