There is always something new happening in the popular Gaslamp District of downtown San Diego. This month was no exception with the recent opening of Viva Bar + Kitchen, a new oasis of chic for tapas and Latin American-influenced cuisine.
Located across the street from Horton Plaza, right in the center of the Gaslamp, Viva offers a variety of Latin American cuisines, from Mexican carne asada fries to Brazilian churrascaria steak. Their appetizer menu is composed of tapas, which are small plates of food to be shared with a good glass of sangria!
We decided to ordered two of their tapas, which were quite large! First was the delicious fish ceviche, served atop fresh tostadas. The fish had excellent texture and the perfect lime flavor. Also enjoyed was a small order of taramind spare ribs, which were unfortunately not photogenic!
I love paella, with its irresistible combination of seafood and saffron rice, so I decided on that as my main meal. Check out all of the seafood! Lots of yummy mussels, scallops, clams, and shrimp!
My dining companion went with the Churrascaria Rib Eye Steak, prepared in the traditional barbeque style, and served with a side of chimichurri sauce. I've never had steak prepared in this manner, and it was good with the sauce.
The grand finale was flan for dessert! I love flan, and this was a delicious representation of the classic custard, served chilled, with lots of caramel sauce.
