I have to say that one of the best parts of living in San Diego, aside from the perfect weather 300 days of the year, the great restaurants, beautiful scenery, and clean air, and wonderful people, is going to summer concerts in the parks and at Del Mar Racetrack! Bit of trivia: Did you know that The Monkees' song "Last Train to Clarksville" was originally titled "Last Train to Del Mar" because of Davy Jones's experience as a jockey at the Del Mar races? Clarksville just seemed to flow better, but an interesting anecdote!
Del Mar Races might not be as famous as its Kentucky cousin, but it's certainly not without notoriety and sophistication. I'll definitely be there next month, with a pretty dress, heels, and a big hat with a flower!
The summer concert series is an anticipated event, and something that both locals and visitors should experience. Top off a classic day of Thoroughbred racing with a free concert costing only the standard racetrack admission – $3 for Diamond Club members (free to sign up) and $6 at regular admission price. Admission for concertgoers entering after the final day’s race is $20. The shows will take place in the Seaside Concert Area, located at the west end of the Grandstand every Friday and select Saturdays and Sundays. Performances begin shortly after the last race of the day. All concerts are 18 and up with the exception of the “Weird Al” Yankovic performance, which is all ages.
